“Poetry is like food,” remarked one of my first teachers, freeing me to dislike Rocky Mountain oysters and Robert Lowell. The menu is vast, the list of things I don't want in my mouth relatively short. - C.D. Wright
My brother told me to enter a poetry
contest, because in America,
even poetry is sports
He read a poem by the judge and said,
“If poetry is like food, this is gasoline
that you eat and pretend to enjoy, for points”
But I’m inclined to ascent, because in America,
fuel is God, and God is fuel,
which is like cumuli, but not like poetry
(Poetry is thin air)
